As part of the Golden Days festival (this year "Philosophy Now!") there will be a giant toga party in Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek - one of the, in my opinion, most beautiful classic buildings in all of Copenhagen. There will be musicians (Jenny Hval, Synd og Skam (Danish post-punk), Lady Smita, Rita Blue og Christian d'Or).

Dress up in your best toga and take it out on the dance floor with all the classic sculptures at Glyptoteket at 20:00-02, Dantes Plads 7, KBH V. More info here:

Welcome and welcome back!

A big, happy welcome to all you new international students at DTU and to all of you who's been here before - both at DTU, in Denmark and at the blog.

I hope you have some really nice introduction guides and buddies and that they will take you to see some awesome stuff this week.

The reason I started this blog was to give you all inspiration on stuff to do and experience in Copenhagen - that Danish people also go and do, so you don't go home one time and discover, that all you saw were lecture halls, campus bars and Kulørbar (nothing wrong with that, though). I think, that if you go to a new (or just different) country, you should experience the whole thing, go and do stuff that the "locals" do. I'm here to help you with that - and also give tips on DTU and Copenhagen life! You can ask me anything and I'll try to do features along the way.

Also, again, I would like to encourage you to write posts, send them to me (ask for my email address in comments or PM me on Facebook) - and I'll put them here for you with name or not - if you find something that's too awesome not to share.

I'm looking forward to meet you all!

Also, I'm happy to tell you, that the blog has had 1000+ views each month since it's beginning exactly one year ago. Even though I might be busy from time to time (I assume you know the feeling as fellow students), I really love your response on the stuff I put here and I really, REALLY hope that you'll have an AWESOME time here in Denmark - no matter for how long or how short you will stay!

FIRST advice to you guys, if you are not familiar with the drill;

You can get your new coursebooks cheap at www.usedbooks.dtu.dk, where DTU students put their used books for sale. AND you can put them for sale there by the end of the semester (or if you realize you bought a book that you'll never have time to read because you're too busy having fun here - I hope that!).

Second, when going around in Copenhagen - watch out for angry bikers. Bikes get their way in Copenhagen! And if you go biking yourself, wear a helmet. It can get rough out there! No accidents, promise? Good. For more advices, check the earlier features with tips - to be found in the "Sider"-feature to the right. That should give you a nice start at least.

All the best wishes for the new semester, have fun!

Events this weekend

This weekend will be packed with awesome stuff to do, so there is not much time to explain!

Friday

Icons in Tivoli

Iconic and much-hated-with-love-by-most-Danes-rappers and guys with feelings, Nik & Jay will be performing in Tivoli tonight. There will be equal amounts of people truly wanting to see the show and people who are there to have a laugh. Doesn't matter if your Danish is not very good yet - the lyrics are simple and you might even have heard them before while staying here. Put on your whitest sneakers, tilt your cap, find red wine and Blå Kings and party.

Entrance: Same as entrance to Tivoli. The show starts at 22.

Zulu Sommerbio

Tonight is the last night with the awesome concept, Zulu Sommerbio, which is a touring outdoor summer cinema! It is free to go and tonight the movie will be a surprise! Bring bunches of blankets and a nice sweater to keep warm with cold beer and popcorn together with a packed Fælledparken!

The movie starts at 21.15 and you can hardly miss the place!

Saturday

STRØM FESTIVAL

Refer to my post about Strøm Festival from the other day! Saturday is the biggest day of the festival!

The Unofficial Strøm After Party (with a Gameboy-soundsystem!)

A GAMEBOY SOUNDSYSTEM! I SAY GO! The party is called Frossen Fisk (Frozen Fish) and it goes down in Basement! There will be other electronic and rave names performing too. Free drinks the first hour! Entrance is 40 kroner! Time is from 23-06. The address is Enghavevej 42. More on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/529279677127619/?ref=2

Galore Urban Art Festival

Galore is an annual free urban art festival set in Valby, more specifically at Toftegaards Plads. S-trains go almost to the door (Valby Station). Entrance is free, beer is 20 kroner and they have a kickass pulled pork burger! The art is of higher quality each year, both the indoor exhibitions and the live street art outside. There are bands performing, and tomorrow from 15, there will be wrestling.

More on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/377832398990147/?fref=ts

Saturday is the last day of the festival, which can also be visited friday!

Sunday

One Love Walk

Sunday gives you a reggae-parade, One Love Walk, as warmup to the Scandinavia Reggae Festival. The parade will go from Christiania to Nørrebro, music will be provided by Karmakanonen (the slightly psychedelic, heartshaped bike-soundsystem) and various Danish reggae/dancehall artists (Pharfar, Raske Penge, Kaka and Youngblood among others). The parade is from 15-19 and it's free to follow them! More on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/555149894546989/

Tivoli's 170th birthday

Hope you don't suffer too much because of the Danish summer weather! In case it decides to behave well, you can go to Tivoli tomorrow (thursday) to celebrate it's 170th birthday! When Tivoli first opened in 1843, all it had was a rollercoaster an a carousel - luckily, there's a bit more going on there today!

There will be lots of stuff going on, mostly with the Tivoli Guards! Most importantly, there will be fireworks at 22:45 - which you can watch for free outside the gardens, so if you happen to be around the centre of Copenhagen, look to the skies at that time.

Unfortunately, Tivoli is still as expensive as always to go to - no birthday offers. :)

Best,
Nanna

STRØM FESTIVAL

The festival season in Denmark is not over yet!

This is the week of the Strøm Festival, one of the more recent festivals. It started in 2007 and is mainly centered around electronic music. The festival is running for one week (this week) and there are tons of free events every day. Because this festival is not just about partying and concerts - they also have workshops, master classes and artist talks... and of course outdoor concerts in Enghaveparken. Artists are both local and international! The programme is really big, so I've collected links for each day this week. The events are not just late - some starts as early as 10 in the morning.

I went last year to the saturday event and it is really, really recommendable! Even if it rains!

See you saturday,

Slightly improved

I've tried to clean the looks of the blog a bit. No major changes, since after messing around with layout a couple of days, I realized that I really like the way it was.

New additions are;

Pages!
To the right, above the archive, I've collected pages that are relevant and otherwise completely impossible to find again after first reading them. I've collected all Spotlights, bars and cafés respectively, and found the short trips from the archives (currently working on a couple more trips for you).

Follow by email!
Since I will not be picking any of you up in the airport this year, and therefore not have a golden opportunity to give you my hand crafted link notecards that day, I've added the follow-by-email gadget. Get the new posts in your inbox, no spam.

Plus some more width (since editing from mobile platforms always was a pain in the brain and not respecting my layout at all), larger types and improved contrast.

Any suggestions for an improved blog will be recieved happily!

I missed you all!

Best,
Nanna

See you in August

Tomorrow early morning I will be on my way to Spain! So this will be the last post before mid-August. What should you spend your time on then, if you are not lucky enough to go to Roskilde Festival this week? Or if the weather stays like it is today and you have to stay in Denmark?

I have collected a list of other festivals in the time where I am out traveling!
Here we go!

Copenhagen Jazz Festival
From July 5th to July 14th!
Lots of lovely jazz music in Copenhagen for an entire week! Most events are free, and those that are not, are not very expensive.
Web page: http://jazz.dk/Program#q=&d=&t=&v=&s=&e=&u=

CPH Opera
From July 28th to August 4th
I did not know that Copenhagen had an opera festival, but it is a great opportunity to learn about it or learn more
if you are already a fan. You will need a ticket for most of the events, but there should be some free ones too.
Web page: http://copenhagenoperafestival.com/en/calendar/

Fringe Jazz Fest
From July 5th to July 14th
Specialized in New Orleans music: jazz, blues, brassband, funk and swing. It is sure to bring some warmth to
Copenhagen and sure to make you move your feet. Most events are free!
Web page: http://www.fringejazzfest.dk/

Bas Under Buen
July 20th
A whole day of free concerts, mostly dubstep, bass and dancehall! Right outside my window! I went last year and
it was a blast! Outdoors and for free.

Henry's Dream
From July 18th to July 21st
A new music/performance festival outside of Copenhagen (specific location is yet to be revealed). 575 kroner for
a couple of days as a part of Henry's dream. That's really all I know!

Musik I Lejet
From July 18th to July 20th
Set in the beautiful Danish summer paradise Tisvildeleje beach, this lovely festival presents a pretty solid lineup
for the two days it lasts. It looks soo awesome and comes in a lot cheaper than Roskilde with only 150-225 kr.
Web page: http://www.musikilejet.dk/program2013

Open Air in Ørstedsparken
From July 25th to July 27th
Cold beer, three movies and popcorn at Copenhagens LGBT film festival, but don't worry - its for everybody!
Stay tuned at their web page for info!
Web page: http://mixcopenhagen.dk/

Also be sure to check out the slightly more expensive festivals Vanguard Festival and Trailerpark Festival!

Enjoy the Danish summer,
All the best,
Nanna
